New generation health foods set to take world by storm
Article Abstract:
Sales of functional foods which can help to prevent illness and improve overall health are predicted to be around $17 billion by the year 2000. Although they are already popular in Japan restrictions on labelling and on advertising which suggest health gains from these products are causing some difficulties for the European authorities. Price setting for functional foods may need to differ between countries as consumers will only pay a premium for certain types of goods.

Commission proposals on organic farm production
Article Abstract:
Draft regulations to extend organic production rules to farm livestock and all other foodstuffs, have been adopted by the European Commission, with the aim of improving production quality and supplementing existing crop production rules. There will be benefits to the consumer such as stricter labelling and quality rules to define organic production. Producers will also be able to sell organic products under common production and processing standards.
